This stark landscape preserves one of the best continuous geologic records of volcanoes on the planet.
• The Narrows - El Malpais National Conservation Area – The Narrows Rim Trail is a 7.8 mile out and back trail located near Cubero, New Mexico. You can hike any time of the year.
• La Ventana Natural Arch – La Ventana, meaning “the window,” is the second largest arch in New Mexico and has a span of 120 feet. It’s five miles east of Grants, New Mexico and features beautiful wildflowers and a walking trail. This trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and bird watching and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
• Ice Cave & Bandera Volcano – 25 minutes south and situated on the Continental Divide, you walk through the twisted, old-growth Juniper, Fir and Ponderosa Pine trees, over the ancient lava trail to the Ice Cave. Here the natural layers of ice glisten blue-green in the reflected rays of sunlight. Another trail winds around the side of the Bandera Volcano to view one of the best examples of a volcanic eruption in the country. Located in the heart of El Malpais, the historic Ice Cave Trading Post displays ancient artifacts as well as contemporary Indian artwork.
• El Morro National Monument – 50 minutes south of Grants sits this reliable waterhole hidden at the base of a sandstone bluff, making El Morro, “the headland,” a popular campsite for hundreds of years. Here, Ancestral Puebloans, Spanish and American travelers carved over 2,000 signatures, dates, messages, and petroglyphs.
• Mt Taylor – This massive, extinct volcano is about 50 miles west of Albuquerque, and is the highest point in the Cibola National Forest. Here, you can hike the Gooseberry Springs Trail, a simple, pleasant three or four mile hike to the summit with only about 2,000 feet of elevation gain.
• Bluewater Lake State Park – This serene lake is located 25 miles west of Grants, and its pinon-juniper landscape offers fantastic views towards the Zuni Mountains. • Red Rock Museum – This museum chronicles the lives and culture of the Anasazi as well as the present-day Zuni, Hopi and Navajo.
• BLM Lands – Located nearby are thousands of public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Unless specifically prohibited, these lands are open to hunting in New Mexico and feature three main types of hunting available -- upland game bird, small game, and big game (for example, deer, antelope, and elk).
